How do I format content with the editor?

Updated Reading time: 2 min

On this page

You design the content of a wiki page directly in the editor: Select text to format it as bold, italic, or a link. Type / to insert headings, lists, tables, notice boxes, and other blocks.

How to design a page#

Open the wiki page and click Edit.

Place the cursor at the start of a line or after a space and type /. The command menu will open.

Type the name of the block, for example Table or Notice, and select it by clicking or pressing Enter.

To format text, select it. A toolbar with Bold, Italic, Link, and other formats will appear above the selection.

Save the page.

Tip

The command menu also understands English and short search terms, for example /hr for a horizontal line or /info for a notice box.

What formatting options are available?#

The table shows where to find the most important formatting options. Entries with / are selected from the command menu, the others from the toolbar above selected text.

How do I edit an image?#

In edit mode, click on an image. A toolbar appears:

  • Align: left, centered, or right

  • Resize: drag the handles on the image edges

  • Replace: upload a different image; the position remains the same

  • Properties: set alt text, title, and width

  • Delete

Info

Give each image a short alt text describing what is visible. This helps people using screen readers understand the content.

What other blocks are available?#

  • Step List: numbered step-by-step instructions

  • Columns: arrange content side by side

  • See Also: references to related wiki pages

  • Embed Video: YouTube, Vimeo, Loom, or a video link

  • Diagram: draw and edit draw.io diagrams

  • Flowchart: create a flowchart diagram from text, with live preview as you type

Can I do this without the command menu?

Yes. The editor automatically applies some formats when you type a shortcut at the start of a line:

  • #, ##, or ### followed by a space: Heading 1, 2, or 3

  • - followed by a space: Bullet list

  • 1. followed by a space: Numbered list

  • > followed by a space: Quote

  • ``` followed by a space: Code block

  • ---: Horizontal line

Insert a line break without a new paragraph using Shift + Enter.
