When do I start a new conversation with Kai?

Updated Reading time: 3 min

On this page

Kai reads the previous course of a conversation with every response. The longer a conversation becomes, the more Kai Credits each individual response costs, even a very short one. Kai therefore keeps long conversations lean itself and suggests starting a new conversation at the appropriate time.

Info

In short: For a new topic, it's best to start a new conversation. This costs significantly fewer credits, and Kai responds faster and more accurately.

What Kai shortens itself in long conversations#

To answer a question, Kai often retrieves data, such as task lists, appointments, or hits from your knowledge. These tool results can be very extensive. When continuing work, Kai replaces older results with a summary:

  • if they are older than your last 4 questions, or

  • if there is a gap of 4 hours or more between them and your new question.

This means that each new response does not have to pay for the entire old history again. If Kai needs the data again, it simply retrieves it anew and then has the current status.

  • What remains unchanged

Your questions and Kai's answers remain fully visible. Short results, such as a recently created appointment, are also retained. Within an ongoing session, Kai keeps the results of your last questions in full so that multi-step tasks work smoothly.

  • What you notice about it

Usually nothing. The conversation looks the same to you as before.

The "New Topic?" prompt#

If you return to a long conversation (from about 20 messages) after a break of more than 4 hours, Kai displays the "New Topic?" prompt with the Start New Chat button above the input field.

You see the prompt:

  • in the Kai area,

  • in the Kai Dock,

  • in the sidebars where you work with Kai on content, for example in notes, in the Workflow Studio, and in the Module Studio in the administration.

The prompt does not hold you up: you can simply continue writing in the previous conversation. You can hide it for this conversation using the cross.

New conversation in the sidebar#

If you work with Kai in a sidebar, such as on a note, a workflow, or a module, you will find the New Conversation button (plus symbol) at the top of the sidebar. You can use it at any time, not just when the prompt appears. Kai will continue working on the same content, but the conversation will start empty.

You see the button if you have permission to edit the content.

What happens to the previous conversation#

  • It is not deleted. You can still find it in the conversation list in the Kai area and can read it there at any time.

  • In the sidebar, only the new conversation will appear afterward. You can open the previous conversation for this content via the Kai area.

  • The new conversation starts empty. It does not carry over the history of the old conversation. If something from it is important, summarize it briefly in your first message.

Tips#

  • Start a new conversation for each new topic instead of continuing an old conversation over days or weeks.

  • Stay in the current conversation if you are directly continuing work on a task that Kai has just completed for you.

  • You can see how much of your personal quota has already been used in the Kai settings. More on this under Kai Credits.
